What to Do When an Employee is Injured: A Step-by-Step Guide

Oh no, you have an injured employee! What do you do now? 

 

In the unfortunate event of an employee injury, it's crucial to act swiftly and efficiently to ensure their safety and well-being. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the first 24 hours after an injury and beyond. 

 

1. Immediate Actions 

Call 911 for emergency and life-threatening situations. 

 

2. Reporting the Injury 

Timely reporting is critical to ensure prompt medical care and benefits. Here’s what you need to do: 

  1. Report Immediately:

3. Complete Injury Forms 

California law requires employers to report within five days of knowledge every occupational injury or illness that results in lost time beyond the date of the incident OR requires medical treatment beyond first aid.

Please remember to provide a DWC1 to your injured employee within 24 hours of knowledge. During this time, please gather wage information, note the names of any employees who were involved in the injury and machinery for future conversations with your assigned adjuster. 

Record the injury or illness on the OSHA Log Form (300) If a fatality or serious injury/illness has occurred, you must report the incident to the nearest Cal/OSHA office within 8 hours. To find the nearest Cal/OSHA office call (510) 286-7000

Access Pharmacy Card 

After selecting a physician from our MPN for treatment, provide the employee with a Pharmacy Card for initial pharmaceutical needs due to an injury-related claim. The temporary pharmacy card can be used for the first fill of standard medications to treat the work-related injury. This card is only good for initial and formula drugs.

Reporting Suspected Abuse or Fraud 

If you suspect abuse or fraud, please report it to your Claims Examiner or via email to [email protected]. For additional information regarding insurance fraud, please visit the California Department of Insurance
