How to Conduct a 15 Minute Safety Meeting
Learn how to conduct a safety meeting in 15 minutes or less to alert employees about workplace hazards and risks.
A. Before the Meeting
- Select your Topic
- Log In to your customer portal here.
- Select "Resources" or "Risk Management" in the top navigation.
- Browse the available Safety Topics or search by industry.
- Prepare
- Review injury reports to identify if employee injuries relate to meeting topic.
- Identify jobs and tasks where the topic applies and be prepared to use examples.
- Identify equipment or tools that apply to the meeting topics
- Review your presentation before conducting the meeting.
- Document
- Have employees sign a Safety Meeting Attendance form as evidence that the meeting occurred. Keep these in a "Safety Meeting" folder for future reference.
B. During the Meeting
- Keep It Interesting
- Use personal experience
- Share an employee story
- Use humor
- Try ending on a positive note for encouragement
- Focus On One Topic
- Try staying away from broad topics. Keep it specific. For example, instead of "hand tool safety", consider "identifying defective hand tools" or "returning tools to their proper place".
- Frequency
- Hold meetings monthly or quarterly depending on the size of your business. Consider scheduling at the same date and time.
- Timing
- Hold meetings at the beginning of a shift, right after lunch, or after a break.
